| Chinese students studying in US express concern over Taiwan issue in letter to Powell |

Chinese students in the newly established Society for Promoting Peaceful Reunification at George Washington University sent a letter on Feb. 17 to their alumni, Colin Powell, US Secretary of State (a MBA student graduated in 1971) and 12 other senior senators, expressing their serious concern about the complex political situation in Taiwan. They called on American politicians to stick to a one-China stance and object Chen Shuibian's "referendum" which attempts to unilaterally change the status quo and split the country, thus posing serious danger to cross-Strait peace and world peace as well.
They said in the letter that as Chinese students who are lucky enough to study in this great university, they feel worried about the irresponsible moves taken currently by Taiwan authorities. They are worried that these one-sided actions would exert bad influence on cross-Strait peace and stability. Chen Shuibian's plan to hold "referendum" on March 20 is unnecessary and provocative.
The students said in the letter, "We are very pleased to learn what you said at the hearing of the Foreign Affair Committee of the House of Representatives, in which you said Washington didn't really see any need for the Taiwan "referendum", and it opposed any action that would change the status quo of the region. We hope that you and your friends will continue to support Mr. President's objection to Taiwan authorities' attempted "referendum" and any action designed to unilaterally change the present cross-Strait situation, because such action would possibly get the United States involved in an unnecessary war in Asia."
