Consul General Gao Yanping Held Chinese New Year Reception

On February 12, Consul General Gao Yanping of the People's Republic of China in Houston heldChinese New Year reception. More than 500 people, including Congressman Al Green, Houston City Council Members Jolanda Jones, Brenda Stardig, Al Hoang and Mike Sullivan, representatives of Texas Governor Rick Perry and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, and other dignitaries attended the reception.

Consul General Gao delivered a speech extending her warm Chinese New Year greetings to all guests. She said that the year 2009 was a remarkable one. Against the backdrop of the world economic crisis, the Chinese government and Chinese people have achieved great accomplishments in maintaining a steady and relatively fast economic development. China is speeding up into a stable, prosperous, democratic and harmonious country, in which the Chinese people enjoy a happier and better life.

Consul General Gao said, thanks to the joint efforts by both sides, China- U.S. relations in various fields have deepened and broadened. A healthy and steady China-U.S. relationship serves the fundamental interests of the two countries and two peoples, and contributes to the world peace and development. China is ready to work with the U.S. to carry out the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries in November 2009. The Chinese Consulate General will join hands with American friends to enhance the mutually beneficial cooperation between China and the United States.

Consul General Gao spoke highly of the Houston Chinese communities for their consistent commitment to promote the exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States.

Congressman Al Green and Houston City Council Member Jolanda Jones also made a few remarks. Congressman Al Green and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee's representative presented certificates of Congressional Recognition to Consul General Gao praising the Chinese Consulate General's dedication to enhancing friendship between China and Houston. Governor Rick Perry issued a congratulatory letter for the event. Houston Mayor Annise Parker proclaimed February 12, 2010 as 2010 Chinese New Year Day.

The guests also enjoyed Chinese art performance and authentic Chinese cuisine. The reception was filled with happiness, laughter and applauses.
