Confucius Statue Dedicated to Houston by Chinese Consulate General and Chinese Community

On the morning of September 26, 2009, the dedication ceremony of the Confucius Bronze Statue — a gift from China to Houston — was held at the Hermann Park. Consul General Gao Yanping, Minister Liu Guangyuan of the Embassy of China to the United States, Mayor Pro Tem of Houston Sue Lovell, First lady of Houston Andrea White, Houston City Councilwoman Wanda Adams, Chairman of Friends of Confucius Sculpture for Hermann Park Yang Jun and Co-Chairman Charles Foster, representative of Congressman Al Green Dawn Lin, Director Turner of Houston Parks and Recreation Department , member of Oscar Jury Lisa Lu and the Sculptor of the Statue Willy Wang attended the ceremony and made remarks. About 600 people from the Chinese Consulate General in Houston, the Houston city government, city council, consular corps and Chinese community were present at the dedication ceremony.

Consul General Gao Yanping and Minister Liu Guangyuan give remarks respectively, believed that the settlement of Confucius Statue at Hermann Park on the occasion of the 2560th Anniversary of the Birth of Confucius and the 30th Anniversary of the establishment of Sino-U.S. diplomatic relations would be very significant in promoting the cultural exchanges between China and the United States and in strengthening the friendship between the two peoples.

Mayor Pro Tem Sue Lovell received the Bronze Statue of Confucius on behalf of two million Houstonians. Ms Lovell highly acclaimed the Chinese Consulate General in Houston and the Houston Chinese community for their contribution to promote the exchanges and cooperation between China and the city of Houston. She said that this special gift would make the culturally diversified Houston more colorful. Dignitaries from China and the United States sent their congratulatory letters to the ceremony, including Chinese Ambassador to the United States Zhou Wenzhong, Chinese Minister of Education Zhou Ji, and President George H.W. Bush, Congressman Al Green, Governor of Texas Rick Perry, Mayor of Houston Bill White and etc. President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush gladly held the post as Honorary Chairs of the Dedication Committee of Confucius Bronze Statue. Mayor White declared that September 26, 2009 was the Day of the Friends of Confucius Statue in Houston.

After the ceremony, a performance named “Marvelous China” was given by Houston Chinese community at the Miller outdoor theatre. The excellent Chinese lion and dragon dances, and many other programs had attracted more than 2000 audience.
