China's pig-borne epidemic under control

Chinanews, Beijing, Aug. 9 (By Zeng Liming) - China's Ministry of Health (MOH) confirmed today that since the epidemic of human beings' infection with streptococcus suis bacteria in Sichuan has been put under control, starting from today, MOH will stop the daily report on the epidemic status to the public. Scattered cases of human beings' infection with streptococcus suis bacteria will be published by local departments of health.

Based on the last epidemic status report issued by the MOH last night, up to 12:00, Aug. 8th, Sichuan recorded no new cases of streptococcus suis bacteria infection and no new cases of deaths caused by such bacteria. From Aug. 3rd till now, Sichuan has reported no new infected cases for six days. On Aug. 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th, there were no new cases of deaths. Ziyang City, where the earliest infected cases were discovered and most epidemic cases broke out, recorded no new cases in eleven consecutive days.

Qiu Haibo, an expert from the national clinical expert group assigned to Sichuan by MOH, indicated that the doctors participating in cure and treatment of the plague have summed up the experience to give emergency treatment to seriously ill patients infected with streptococcus suis bacteria. The mortality rate of toxic shock cases has declined from 80% to below 20%, basically in line with the international level.
