Remarks by Consul General Li Qiangmin At the Reception Celebrating the 66th Anniversary of the Founding of The People's Republic of China

2015/09/24

Distinguished guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening! Welcome to our reception and celebrate the 66th Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China with us.

This year’s National Day takes on special significance in three aspects. Firstly, it sees President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the U.S. President Xi is now in Washington D.C. At this moment, he is meeting with President Obama. Tomorrow, he will receive full state visit arrangements including state dinner.

This is President Xi’s first State visit to the U.S. This is another historical meeting between the two leaders, following their meetings in Sunny lands, California and in Yingtai, Beijing.

President Xi’s visit is to enhance mutual trust and reduce misgivings. His visit focuses on cooperation and sets to create the future. President Xi brings a clear message to the U.S. and the world. That is, China stands for peaceful development, not hegemony. China stands for greater democracy in international relations, not power politics. China stands for win-win cooperation, not zero-sum game. And China stands for a right approach to interests and principles, not a pursuit for selfish interests.

During this visit, the two leaders are expected to reach important agreements in economy and trade, energy, people-to-people exchange, climate change, environmental protection, and many other areas. The two leaders will have in-depth exchange of views on regional and international hot-spot issues.

President Xi’s visit will be a major milestone for China-US relations. Both countries have dreams to gain great successes through arduous efforts. Both people, working together hand-in-hand to realize the dreams, will surely create a peaceful promising future.

Secondly, this National Day sees our Commemoration of 70th anniversary of Victory of Chinese People’s Resistance against Japanese Aggression and World Anti-Fascist War. The experience of war makes people value peace all the more. Bearing history in mind, Chinese people will remain committed to peaceful development, to win-win strategy of opening-up, to pursue friendly cooperation with all other countries and safeguard the world peace.

We remember the days when China and U.S. fighting side by side, and are always grateful for U.S. in supporting China’s resistance against Japanese aggression. 5 days ago in Monroe, Louisiana, Chinese Yuhuang Chemical Co. awarded pure gold medals to 7 Flying Tigers Veterans, to express respect and gratitude to them on behalf of the ordinary people of China. I had the honor to witness the touching occasion. May the friendship between Chinese and American people be forever precious and shining like the gold!

Thirdly, this year marks a key stage in China’s implementation of its Comprehensive Four-pronged Strategy. Following the Strategy, we are working hard to realize the China’s Dream of national revitalization and peaceful development.

We are able to cope with the challenge in the process of structural reform. We have full confidence in China’s macroeconomic stability. Like what President Xi has said during the interview with Wall Street Journal, if we liken China’s economy to a large ship on the sea, we will ask whether it is sailing in the right direction and whether it has sufficient engine power and energy to stay long. Any ship, however large, may occasionally get unstable sailing on the high sea.

China’s economy reached a growth rate of 7% in first half of this year, making a 30% contribution to the world economic growth. This is enough to show that China is the global economic powerhouse. We stand ready to strengthen policy coordination with all countries, to create new power for growth, and jointly contribute to the stability and recovery of world economy.

China’s development and China-US close cooperation will deliver visible and touchable benefits to both peoples. China and U.S. will hopefully be the top trade partners of each other in 2022. The value of U.S. exports to China is estimated to be over $530 billion, which will generate more than 3.4 million job opportunities. In 2020, China’s investment in the U.S. is expected to reach $200 billion, which will generate 4 million job opportunities for the U.S. It is a promising and beautiful future for all of us.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

When talking about how to advance the new model of major country relationship between China and the U.S., President Xi emphasized that both countries must read each other's strategic intentions correctly, firmly advance win-win cooperation, manage our differences properly and effectively, and foster friendly sentiments among our peoples.

We are in the Southern part of the U.S. How to make the Southern U.S. a key contributor or promoter of China-US win-win cooperation can be a common project to all of us. We already had a good foundation. Take Texas as an example. China is now the 4th largest export market of Texas. The value of Texas export to China reached $11 billion in 2014. China’s investment in the Southern U.S. has exceeded $17 billion at present. The investment has created thousands of job opportunities. For people to people exchange, we now have direct flights between Houston and Beijing, Dallas and Shanghai, Hong Kong, Beijing operated by Air China and American Airlines. The popularities of the air routes demonstrate the great potential of our cooperation.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are facing great opportunities while China rapidly develops and China-US relationship tying up. Our cooperation will surely be pushed forward to new stages with our jointly efforts, which is just President Xi’s visit aims at.

To conclude, I'd like to propose a toast,

To the growing prosperity of China,

To the friendship between China and U.S.,

To the happiness of the peoples,

Cheers!
