The Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Houston hosted the awards ceremony of the 2016 Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad and the Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region

On May 6, 2017, the awards ceremony of the 2016 Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad and the Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was held at the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Houston. Deputy Consul General Zhao Yumin delivered a speech at the awards ceremony and awarded the winners, and Education Counsellor Long Jie hosted the ceremony. More than 50 people attended the ceremony including awardees, some family members and mentors of the awarded students, as well as representatives from student associations and the media.

Deputy Consul General Zhao Yumin Deputy expressed his congratulations to the awardees and their mentors and families. He reviewed the history of Chinese students in US and the significant contributions made by educational exchanges to promoting friendly relationship between China and US. He said that Chinese government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad is one of the important measures taken in the new period, aiming to encourage the self-financed students to study hard and serve the country or return to China with outstanding achievements, which has fully manifested the great concern and support given by the government to the self-financed overseas students. Currently China-US relations have maintained a positive momentum of development, and the people to people exchange between China and the southern U.S.is facing great development opportunities. It is very promising for Chinese students and scholars in US not only to enhance increase their own academic and professional achievements but also to promote the China-US relations. He also put forward some expectations that the awardees continue to work hard to make better academic achievement, play the role as envoys between China and the United States, and associate personal ideals and career ambitions with the future of the motherland so as to create their own wonderful life in realizing the great Chinese Dream.

Counsellor Long Jie briefly introduced the 2016 Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad and the Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In 2016, 501 students were presented the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad. Among them 19 were from our consular district, and particularly, Dr. Yu Ruomeng from Georgia Institute of Technology won the Top Prize which was only awarded to ten students this year. And more, Tuoerhongjiang Yusufu of University of Central Florida won the Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Dr. Yu Ruomeng spoked at the ceremony on behalf of the awardees. He expressed deep thanks for the care and attention from Chinese government and the wonderful organization of the Chinese Consulate General, and shared his study experience in US. He regarded the award as recognition of his work and also the motivation and responsibility to serve the country and society in return.

Prof. James M. Tour from Rice University, as representative of the supervisors of the awarded students, addressed the audience at the ceremony. He reviewed the close teamwork and friendship with the generations of Chinese students with deep feeling, and spoke highly of the excellent work the great contributions of the Chinese students in US. He also expressed his willingness to promote Sino-US cooperation and exchanges in education and technology.
